Our History

The Victoria Theatre is San Francisco’s oldest operating theatre.  It opened in 1908 and now is a City Landmark.  It first opened as Brown’s Opera House and showcased vaudeville acts of that era. After a short stint as Brown’s Opera House, the name was changed to Victoria Theatre.  In the 1930’s the theatre started showing films, as film pictures became the dominant art form of the time.

In 1940’s and 50’s, the theatre started showing Spanish speaking films. By the late 60’s the theatre had become a burlesque house under the name, New Follies.

The theatre closed in 1976.  The neighborhood, fearing the theatre would be turned into a parking lot for the new Bart Station, was privately purchased by Robert and Anita Correa in 1978.  It was restored and reopened under its former name, The Victoria Theatre.

The theatre has undergone many transformations over the years, but has retained its mission to bring live and film entertainment to the San Francisco community.  You can see everything here, live theatre, film festivals, musical concerts and community events.
